Kursky Railway Station
Kursky (Nizhegorodsky) railway station, the biggest one in Moscow, dates back to 1860, when the first station building was constructed for the Kurskaya railway. P.P. Melnikov – minister of means of communication himself used to select the area for building up. His choice was unique: at that time it was the only Moscow station located beyond the city boundaries.
The choice of the minister can be easily explained: the land outside the city was much cheaper, construction tax was less, and construction should not be that expensive.
The building of those times did not remain till present time. The immortal novel “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy described seeing-off of Vronsky to war from that station: crush, inconvenient approaches. That was all that remained from the first station.
Some time after the tsarist government decided to improve the situation. It was decided that the original Nizhegorodsky railway station should be combined with the new Kursky station that was being built at the Sadovoye ring.
In 1896 under the guidance of N.P. Orlov a new building of the station was erected.
There happened a curious episode during construction: digger workers found some huge egg, very unusual one. Scientists supposed that was a dinosaur egg. Just imagine – Moscow and dinosaurs! Although there was nothing strange in it: in ancient times there were thick forests at that place!
The station was reconstructed in 30's under the guidance of architect G.I. Voloshinov. It was him who erected the new station building in 1972, where they tried to preserve the inner old premises with colonnade and rich modeling.
The modern high building, decorated with stained glass, faces the station square. It is covered by a unique folded roof that makes a 9 meter long deflector. Spacious halls can accommodate 11 thousand people at a time. In the center of the hall there are escalators that take passengers into the underground hall with luggage offices.
Metro stations Kurskaya and Chkalovskaya are situated near the Kursky railway station.
Long distance trains start from Kievsky station to such cities as Baku, Kerch, Poltava, Sevastopol, Yevpatoria, Simferopol.
